New 2nd Edition • Online • Universal Screening
Research has demonstrated that early identification of at-risk students—and subsequent intervention—can increase these students' opportunities for school success dramatically. SSBD universal screening allows your staff to provide that early intervention and remediation. By identifying students proactively early in their development, you can prevent escalation of problems before they become serious.
SSBD is an evidence-based universal screening system for identifying students who have behavioral challenges that put them at risk for peer problems and school failure. Universal screening can help staff:
SSBD was the first universal screening system for identification of at-risk students and is now considered the gold standard in behavioral screening. It's the only available screening tool that screens for both externalizing and internalizing problems.
SSBD is a multiple-gating assessment procedure, which simply means that students are evaluated in stages.
The first stage is a universal screening to identify students at risk for externalizing and internalizing behavior disorders. In this stage, teachers nominate students in their classes who, in their experience, may be at risk for externalizing or internalizing behavior problems.
For each nominated student, teachers complete a critical events checklist along with adaptive and maladaptive scales to determine which students identified from initial screening are in need of Tier 2 and 3 intervention.
For each identified student, SSBD compares the results from these two stages to a normative sample. Students in the top 5% of internalizing or externalizing behavioral indicators have passed the second screening "gate" and are considered to be at risk for exhibiting internalizing or externalizing behavior problems.
SSBD produces automated reports for students identified as at risk. These students can then be referred to your school psychologist or student study teams for intervention planning and support, or referred for additional assessment.
SSBD screens for both internalizing and externalizing problems. These two forms of behavioral problems can disrupt social adjustment and impair academic success. SSBD provides the means to identify these students early and enables school staff to implement early interventions and supports.
